Charlie

Written and Performed by John Dominick Carratello

Look in his eyes and you know
Charlie's not the man he used to be.
Served his country. Got a good job.
Fell in love and raised a family.

And when Charlie tries to speak,
It's so hard his mind's so weak.
He can't remember . . .

Charlie likes to write things down.
Tries so hard to keep thoughts inside his head.
What a way to lose your life.
Your body keeps on going, but your brain's going dead.

And when Charlie tries to speak,
It's so hard his mind's so weak.
He can't remember . . .

Never lets you out of his sight,
So afraid you'll leave . . . you're tempted you might.
Feel like you can't get away.
Outside, you're strong, but inside you pray.

Charlie . . . He was fun to be around.
Always had a joke. Funny, you bet.
But, nobody's laughing any more.
Charlie's putting toothpaste on his old Gillette.

And when Charlie tries to speak,
It's so hard his mind's so weak.
He can't remember . . .

Never lets you out of his sight,
So afraid you'll leave . . . you're tempted you might.
Feel like you can't get away.
Outside, you're strong, but inside you pray.

Doesn't recognize his old friends.
That damned disease! Just look what it did!
Someone you've known all your life
Asks you your name.
You answer, “Pop, I’m your kid!”

And when Charlie tries to speak,
It's so hard his mind's so weak.
He can't remember . . .
